Swan Valley

Perth’s Swan Valley is only a short 20 minutes from the city, and is a great destination for a day trip from Perth. The Swan Valley Region is steeped in rich history and is one of Western Australia’s oldest wine regions. The region is home to more that 40 vineyards, many of which are still run by the descendants of families who originally came from Europe and started the wineries many years ago.

One of the unique characteristics of the Swan Valley for wine lovers, is that it is particularly renowned for high quality fortified wines, such as Muscats, Ports and a number of unique liqueur wines which are available direct from the cellar door and are not produced anywhere else.

Food and Drink

Beer lovers will not be disappointed either, as there are a number of boutique and micro breweries in the region making their own award winning brews. You will find over 20 locally brewed beers on offer, including ales, stout and even German and Belgian style beers.

Fine wine and food certainly make great companions, and the Swan Valley has a number of local restaurants and cafes where you can enjoy the local wine, beer and delicious food often made with fresh local produce. Relaxed alfresco dining is a popular feature of the Swan Valley particularly in summer, and many of the eateries and restaurants have bright yet shady undercover areas for a casual dining experience, somewhat reminiscent of a mediterranean holiday.

What to See and Do when Visiting

The Swan Valley also comes to life with regular live music at many of the restaurants and venues, particularly at weekends, and also hosts a number of special outdoor events over the summer months.

A visit to the Swan Valley in Perth would not be complete without a stop at Whiteman Park. This conservation park covers over 4000 hectares of protected bushland and wetland, as well as recreation areas. The park is home to a large range of native tree and plant species including Banksias, Melaleucas, Wattles and Grass Trees.

Being a conservation park, it’s not surprising that a number of native birds and animals also find the park an attractive place to visit. Visitors can enjoy seeing native animals such as birds, reptiles, wetland animals, echidnas, wallabies and Kangaroos roaming the park freely in a natural habitat environment.

Whiteman Park also offers a great location for picnics and barbeques in a relaxed bushland setting, and coin operated gas and electric barbeques are available for your use in the park’s picnic and recreation areas. Other activities at the park include train rides, motor and tractor museums, and the Caversham Wildlife Park.

Conclusion

Whether it is the food, wine and beer, relaxed dining and entertainment, the historic atmosphere, or surrounding yourself with some of Western Australia’s native flora and fauna while picnicking under the trees, Perth’s Swan Valley is truly worth a visit during your stay in Perth.
