Fun Facts about Quokkas

Fun facts about quokkas (the ones visitors actually love)

1) Quokkas aren’t rodents, they’re mini wallaby relatives

Despite the nickname and the selfie fame, a quokka is a marsupial (same broader family as the well know kangaroos and wallabies). The mums carry their joeys in its pouch, and you’ll often spot quokkas hopping between shady spots around the Island.

2) Rottnest’s name comes from a hilarious mistake

The island’s name traces back to early Dutch explorers who thought quokkas looked like big rats. You would not believe it, but they called the place “Rat’s Nest” (which is how the name “Rottnest” was born). It’s one of the best little origin stories in WA.

3) The “quokka smile” is real… but it’s not a pose

That famous grin is mostly down to their facial shape and the way they chew, not because they’re “smiling for the camera.”

4) Rottnest is the easiest place on Earth to see quokkas up close

Quokkas are native to South-West WA, but Rottnest Island is the standout spot for any and all visitors, to see them, because quokkas are commonly near settlements and foot paths.

5) A great quokka selfie, usually happens when you don’t chase one

Crouch down, give them space, and let the quokka move naturally to you. Wide-angle shots make it look close without crowding the animal, better for your photo and better for the quokka.

6) You can’t touch or feed quokkas

Tourists often ask “can you touch or feed quokkas?” The official guidance is clear no, don’t touch and don’t feed them. It protects them from stress and illness and keeps their behaviour wild (and safe for everyone).
